So here is a completion of the first page which depicts our protagonist suffering from combat stress, which then becomes interrupted upon the arrival of her close friend.
I used Illustrator and SAI to create this page; SAI was mainly used to draw the characters while Illustrator was used to edit the photographs, layout the panels and insert the typography.
Illustrator was used to create a hand-drawn effect for the photos, to blend with the art style of my characters.
It was also used draw the coin and include brush strokes to once again imitate pencil sketches, particularly for the outlines of speech bubbles and onomatopoeia.
Typeface used- Anime Ace
SAI was used to create the effects such as the motion lines, lighting, reflective shining and blurring.
The Sylvia’s vision of the world being overrun by the enemy was created by overlaying two images; one was one my photographs of Dunorlan Park and the other was a hand-drawn landscape ravaged by the enemy.
Storyboard and finished page comparison. I stuck with the panel layout but changed the content slightly- instead of Sylvia looking up at the sky deep in her thoughts, she’s looking straight ahead with a 1000 yard stare. My reason for this was to create a more powerful first impression for the introduction of our protagonist.
Inspiration and influences- Attack on Titan has had a slight influence on how I draw expressions and onomatopoeia. The layout of the typography of onomatopoeia applies to many more comics- It’s not just simply typed, each letter is then usually resized and repositioned to depict the written sound.
